Site Search Query Tips
A search query can be as simple as just one word
or phrase. However, it easy to expand that word or phrase into something
more powerful.
- The keyword OR is used to find one or both words
in a query. (Ex. internet OR web will find the word Internet or web or
both)
- Use an asterisk (*) to search for words with
the same prefix. (Ex. doc* will locate document, doctor, dock,
etc.)
- Two asterisks (**) can be used to locate all
forms of a word. (Ex. sing** will find sing, sang, sung,
etc.)
- The AND NOT keywords are used to exclude words
from your search. (Ex. driving AND NOT the car will return
items that do not contain the car but do
contain the word driving)
- Quotation marks ("") are used to locate
an exact match of the quoted words. (Ex. "Internet or web" will
only return pages that contain the exact phrase Internet or web)
- Free Text queries are used to perform searches
using natural language. Any text can be used, including questions.
Our web server will attempt to construct a query for you based on
the text you supply. (Ex. What services does the Library offer? will
return a list of pages that relate to Library services.)
General Search Information
- Please remember that the Site Search will only
locate pages that are within the UAMS Library's web site. It will
not perform a search on the UAMS
Library's Catalog or the World Wide Web.
- If you choose to start a New Search or Exit
to the Forms menu your current search query will no longer be available.
