New Members Information

Welcome to the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association (SCC/MLA). The South Central Chapter is one of fourteen chapters of the Medical Library Association (MLA), a professional organization of individuals and institutions in the health sciences library field. SCC has members from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. If you would like to learn more about the development of this Chapter, a history is available at the MLA website: http://www.mlanet.org/about/history/unit-history/s_central.html.

The following information will help new members of the South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association become familiar with the organization and its members. The Little Rock Local Arrangements Committee will be available to help navigate new members through the conference. Just look for anyone wearing duck paraphernalia! You may also want to visit the hospitality table for information about the SCC conference program and things to do in the City.

Professional Development

New members might find poster presenting and/or giving a contributed paper a great opportunity for professional development within SCC. You may want to browse conference abstracts, check out the posters presented in Little Rock, and attend contributed paper sessions to get an idea of the research judging criteria, and what librarians are involved in.  The South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium (SCAMeL) provides monetary awards for selected contributed papers and posters presented at the annual meetings. http://www.sccmla.org/SCC%20Research%20Awards%20--%20Purpose.htm.

SCAMeL also provides grant awards for the improvement of library and information service practices and the development of information policy. The research must show how the proposed project would contribute significantly to the profession's body of knowledge. SCAMeL grants require that applicants have 2 years experience in a professional position. The SCAMeL research award winners listed on the research web page for new members to peruse: http://www.sccmla.org/research.html#Grants.

Research mentoring service is also offered to SCC individuals. If you are uncertain about whom to contact, email a message to Kathryn Kerdolff, Chair of the Research Committee, and she will put you in touch with a suitable mentor.

New members might want to volunteer to be on the research committee.  Members on the Research committee evaluate SCC research projects.
