New Computers – New Opportunities The Library recently replaced twelve computers located on the first floor with new PCs that are faster and easier to use. Replacement of library computers is done on a rotation basis each year in an attempt to provide the newest and best technology for our users. The new PCs have faster processors allowing programs to open and load with less wait time. The new PCs also have read/writeable DVD and CD technology. Now you can store at least 600 times more information on a CD than a floppy disk. Based on the antiquated technology of floppy disks and the fact that many new PCs today do not come with floppy drives, the Library will be phasing out the use of floppies and floppy drives over the next three years. The Reference staff has added a sign to each new PC indicating that it does not have a floppy drive available. The new PCs also come with new digital flat screen monitors. These monitors take up less desk space and are clearer and sharper than old flat screens. The monitors also have a USB port on the left hand side of the screen. This allows easy access for thumb drives. |

The Library does not sell thumb drives or floppy disks, but CD’s are sold at the circulation desk. For further information, contact Chuck Byrne, Systems Analyst, ByrneCharlesA@uams.edu
