History of UAMS Display Center Officially Opened

The Library’s Historical Research Center and its History of Medicine Associates are heavily involved in the continuing operation of the new History of UAMS Display Center on the first floor of the hospital, across from the College of Medicine offices.

On Wednesday, August 3rd, the dedication of the Display Center was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and reception. Amanda Saar, Chair of the Historical Research Center as well as Treasurer of the History of Medicine Associates; Sharon Keel, Reference Assistant, and Jonathan Wolfe, PhD, College of Pharmacy were all actively involved in seeing that the festivities went as planned.

Those speaking included E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, Dean of the College of Medicine; I. Dodd Wilson, MD, Chancellor; John Shock, MD, Executive Vice Chancellor; Jonathan Wolfe, PhD, College of Pharmacy and Curator of the Display Center, and Richard Clark, MD, President of the History of Medicine Associates. Dr. Clark cut the ribbon, and the Display Center is now officially open. About fifty people attended, many of them faculty as well as members of the History of Medicine Associates.

This display area was created in order to continue the representation of the history of UAMS that began with the exhibit at the Old State House: “Medical Education at the Old State House 1912-1935, From Flexner to the New Deal.” That exhibit ran from October of 2001 to September of 2002. After its closing, the absence of a continuing display for the history of UAMS was felt, and the idea of the History of UAMS Display was created.

The construction was funded by Dr. Reece and Dr. Wilson, and the continuing upkeep of the Display Center will be supported by the History of Medicine Associates. The items displayed will change from time to time and represent all of UAMS. If there are aspects of the history of the campus that you would like to see presented, let us know. In addition, the next time you are on campus, stop by and admire it!
