Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) Support for UAMS

The UAMS Library is providing assistance for students, faculty, and staff in the use of Pocket PC and Palm OS handheld devices. PDA support services are provided from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday. If you are new to handheld technology, you may want to call ahead and consult with us about your device. We can advise you about available resources and memory requirements. We have experience with most Palm OS and Pocket PC devices, and we will do our best to answer your questions. For assistance and appointments, call 686-6752 or contact; Fred Bassett, Loretta Edwards, Abby Holt, Brynn Mays, Shawn McGhee, Tim Muren, or Heather Smith.

If you would like to install new applications onto your handheld or use the PDA stations in the Library Learning Resource Center, 5th floor, or the 3rd floor multimedia area, please bring your PDA, software CD, and handheld cradle. An expansion card is not required, but recommended if you are installing large databases onto handhelds.

Before you install new programs onto your handheld be sure to back up the contents of your PDA. Here are some suggestions:

  • Synchronize your PDA at your own desktop computer on a regular basis.
  • Purchase a backup expansion card if you do not have access to a personal desktop computer.
  • Backup your existing PDA applications prior to installing new ones so that you will be able to restore them if necessary.

Applications for your Handheld

Clinical Pharmacology Onhand and Micromedex are two comprehensive drug applications available to UAMS affiliates from subscriptions purchased by the Library and the College of Pharmacy. A campus PC connection is required to upload these applications and to receive updates. We also have discounts for ePocrates, an all in one resource for information about drugs, diseases, and diagnostics, and Skyscape, online medical textbooks for the Palm and Pocket PC. Please see our PDA webpage for more information about these resources.

The UAMS Library is happy to provide PDA stations and support services to students, staff and faculty; we cannot be responsible for any loss of PDA data or functionality that might occur during the use of our facilities.

Ovid SDI/AutoAlert news

For users who have not been receiving their AutoAlerts:

If you have saved searches under a personal login for Ovid, you should check your email address which you have as part of the saved strategy. The Exchange server here at UAMS was de-activated some time ago, and any messages with that address will not come through.

Procedure:

  • Login to Ovid with your personal ID and password.
  • Choose a database.
You may want to use the one where you have the most searches, but all your searches will display no matter which database you are in.
  • Click on the Saved Searches button (small, teal color, below the Search History box).
  • For each search in the AutoAlert (SDI) section, click on the Edit button to the right.
  • Scroll down to the Recipient's Address line: erase the old address and enter your current address.
  • Click Save Search in the oval button at the top of the page.

That's it. Remember to do this for each AutoAlert you have. These are independent searches, so one change will not cover all of them.

If you want to know what an AutoAlert is and how to set one up in Ovid, go to the help section (Have a Question?) from the Library's home page.

If you have questions, call the Library Reference Desk at 686-6734 or email LibraryReferenceDesk@uams.edu.
