From the Library Director:
Library Annual Report 2002/2003
Library staff recently completed the Library’s 2002/2003 annual
report, which is available at http://www.library.uams.edu/aboutlib/annualrpt03.htm.
The report includes annual statistics, such as the number of volumes
in the collection, etc.
Accomplishments for the year include the following:
Collection Management
- Negotiated licenses and maintained catalog records for 2,551
online journals
- Revised 2,000+ online journal records for the implementation
of the proxy service
- Maintained 949 print journal subscriptions
- Purchased and cataloged
707 books
- Cataloged 1,619 books and 945 audiovisuals, and withdrew
800 titles for the AHEC libraries (a 51% increase in the amount of
work done for these
libraries last year)
- Cataloged nearly 250 books for the ACH Library
- Cataloged 278 volumes
for UAMS departmental libraries
- Began cataloging for the satellite
Centers on Aging libraries throughout the state
- Continued implementing
the Innovative Interfaces (III) library system
(began using Millenium for editing bibliographic and checkin records)
- Reviewed
the gastrointestinal medicine, aging, biology, and general medicine
sections of the book collection and withdrew 1,318 volumes
- Revised
the online records for the 800 books moved from Reference to the Watson
Room
- Sold 925 items at the annual book sale
- Purchased an institutional
membership in BioMed Central
Document Access Services and Systems
- Circulated 19,378 items, shelved 71,699 items, borrowed
9,195 items and loaned 7,759 items through interlibrary loan, provided
296 copies of
articles through the document delivery service, and provided 1,397
items to ACH
- Registered 1,288 patrons
- Successfully implemented the proxy service
for remote access to online resources
- Made electronic classroom reserve
materials available through the Docutek software
- Added seven public
computers and one printer, and replaced 25 public computers
- Provided
training for AHEC librarians
- Selected and began implementation of the
GoPrint pay-for-print system
- Provided network/server support for the
Library and several other Academic Affairs units
Historical Research Center
- Assisted 149 patrons in using 816 items from HRC collections
- Prepared
and displayed seven exhibits
- Accessioned 15 items and collections
- Coordinated History of Medicine
Associates program, including the annual dinner, the annual lecture
series, and the Research Award
Education and Reference Services
- Taught 95 formal classes on information access topics for
731 attendees
- Provided informal instruction for 3,404 individuals
- Answered over
6,000 reference questions
- Provided 162 mediated searches
- Began a year-long comparison of several
clinical information tools to reduce duplication
- Provided curriculum
support in the Learning Resource Center, including 4,433 uses of audiovisual
materials and 80,000 uses of computer-based
instructional programs
- Increased the amount of outreach activities
provided by the Library, including an all-day workshop for the Partners
in the Health Sciences
program, and 38 presentations and/or exhibits at health professional
meetings or health fairs with a total of 619 contracts
- Moved
and expanded the Faculty Development Room
- Implemented an Access Grid
facility
- Provided 84 tours, orientations, and presentations for 2,238
attendees, including 13 Friday@Noon presentations for 342 attendees
- Reserved
instructional and testing rooms 193 times
- Administered 122 tests to
3,933 students
- Continued producing the electronic newsletter on a bimonthly
basis
- Maintained the Library’s web site and ARHealthLINK consumer
health information web site
Administration
- Continued implementation of SAP
- Coordinated library services contract
for Arkansas Children’s
Hospital
- Coordinated the Arkansas Public Health Information Network
Project
- Provided nine presentations/orientations for 200 attendees
Physical Facilities
- Reorganized most staff office space
- Converted several staff spaces
to public space and archives storage space
- Developed plans for move
of Academic Support Center to the Library
- Added new signage throughout
the Library
- Changed weekend and holiday hours to more accurately reflect
usage patterns and demand
Personnel
- Provided more staff training and more training for AHEC
librarians
- Provided more cross-training and sharing of resources between
departments
- Revised staff duties for maintaining online journal records
- Converted
two positions to be half-time admin/half-time DAS or Education/Ref
positions
- Converted a Circulation position to a floater shared by ILL
and Circulation departments
