Library Annual Report
Library staff
recently completed the Library’s 2001/2002 annual report, which
is available at http://www.library.uams.edu/aboutlib/annualrpt02.htm.
The report includes annual statistics, such as number of volumes in the
collection, number of online journals and books, etc. Selected highlights
of accomplishments for the year include the following:
Collection Management
- Increased number of links in the catalog to online resources from
1,091 to 2,118
- Cataloged 952 books, 741 audiovisuals, and withdrew 356 titles for
the AHEC libraries
- Implemented LinkOut for PubMed and OpenLinks for Ovid to provide access
directly from database citations to the full-text articles when available
- Reviewed the reference collection and several other sections of the
book collection and withdrew 1,790 volumes
Document Access Services
- Implemented the ILLiad software, providing a faster and better-integrated
paperless method of providing interlibrary loan service
- Began using TexExpress courier service for delivering materials to
participating libraries
- Implemented electronic reserves
- Created an improved interface for the Library’s public workstations
- Maintained the Library’s web site and ARHealthLINK consumer
health information web site
- Replaced public computers with newer models and flat panel monitors
- Added six public computers and one printer
- Replaced all photocopiers, coin-ops and vendacard machines
Historical Research Center
- Assisted 160 patrons in using 911 items (a 56% increase) from HRC
collections
- Prepared and displayed nine exhibits
- Accessioned 28 items and collections, including 60 boxes from Drs.
Ward and Wilson
- Coordinated History of Medicine Associates program, including the
annual dinner and the annual lecture series. Associates membership increased
18%.
- Worked with Dr. Jon Wolfe and the Old State House Museum staff on
the COM exhibit
Education and Reference Services
- Taught 127 formal classes on information access topics
- Provided informal instruction for 3,426 individuals
- Added Clineguide (treatment pathways, drug database, etc.)
and MedWeaver (differential diagnosis) software, and Books@Ovid
(12 online textbooks), and worked with Clinical IT and the Clineanswers
company on the implementation/continuing development of Clineguide
- Worked with several departments and the clinical clerkship program
to provide better access to information at the point of need
- Provided curriculum support in the Learning Resource Center, including
27,781 uses of audiovisual materials and 82,258 uses of computer-based
instructional programs
- Coordinated the PDA project for Junior Medical Students
- Increased the amount of outreach activities provided by the Library,
including an all-day workshop for the Partners in the Health Sciences
program, and presentations and/or exhibits at 15 meetings
- Coordinated 14 Friday@Noon presentations for 351 attendees
- Reserved instructional and testing rooms 215 times
- Administered 119 tests to 2,702 students
Administration
- Reorganized Library management structure (combined Systems and Document
Access Services departments, combined Reference and Learning Resource
Center departments, and combined two staff positions into a Curriculum
Support Librarian position)
- Implemented SAP financial system
- Coordinated library services contract for Arkansas Children’s
Hospital
Physical Facilities
- Replaced furniture and added shelving in soft-seating area on 1st
floor
- Studied space needs and developed plans for reorganization of most
staff space, conversion of several staff spaces to public space and
archives storage space (plans were approved and will be implemented
in July-August 2002)
Major Problems Which Affected Services
The Library was unable to provide services at the
levels desired because of the following problems:
- Inadequate journals/books budget
- Lack of space (study space, archives processing and storage space,
office space)
