From the Director

The UAMS Library's management team has been discussing for quite some time the best way to improve the Library's ability to provide much needed educational services. We need to increase the amount of instruction on Ovid and other products and services presently provided by the Library. In addition, we have received many requests for instruction on copyright issues and other topics not yet covered in classes offered by the Library. In order to improve the Library's ability to provide these services, the following changes were made in November, 2001:

1) A new Education Services department was established. Jan Hart, soon to receive her doctorate in Education, is the head of the department. The Learning Resource Center will continue to be one of Jan's responsibilities in this new department.

2) Rena Sheffer, who was formerly in the Information Services and Systems Department, is now the Information Resources Instruction Librarian in the Education Services Department. Her primary responsibilities include teaching Ovid and other classes related to the Library's resources.

3) A Curriculum Support Librarian position was established by combining two vacant staff positions, one in Interlibrary Loan and one in the Administrative Office. The responsibilities of this position include working with faculty in the various colleges to identify and purchase, or subscribe to, educational materials in support of the curriculum, and providing access to educational programs from point-of-care and distributed locations on and off campus. We will begin recruiting a librarian for this position soon.

We anticipate that these changes will result in a significant increase in the Library's ability to provide much needed education services. Please let us know what the Library can do to help meet your educational needs. Jan can be reached at 686-6751 or hartjank@uams.edu.

Outreach News

Outreach Buffet

Below is a quick glimpse of some important outreach items of interest.

OT/PT/Public Health Focus
The UAMS Library has an annual subcontract with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (funded by the National Library of Medicine or NLM) to provide training for unaffiliated health professionals in Arkansas to use NLM's products and services.

The outreach subcontracts for the next 5 years will focus on particular groups of health professionals. This year's contract enables us to provide training in the use of NLM databases and products for Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and public health officials working in state health units/departments.

These 3 groups will have access to free training in the use of PubMed to search the MEDLINE database, as well as assistance finding information resources in their fields and for presentation to their professional groups.

If you are interested in attending training or would like more information, please contact Susan Steelman.

Internet Connectivity Sites
Johnson Regional Medical Center in Clarksville was awarded an Internet Connectivity Grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region which is part of the National Library of Medicine. During October, 2001, Susan Steelman visited JRMC and conducted PubMed training for the staff there.

Each award includes a new computer, printer, fax machine and 12 months of Internet access. Free training is provided in the use of the equipment, general Internet functions and use, and PubMed searching.

Additional awards should be available in coming months. If you know of an Arkansas hospital with little or no Internet connectivity, it may be eligible for this program. If you'd like more information on the Internet Connectivity Project, call Susan Steelman, UAMS Library, 501-686-6737 or email: SteelmanSusanC@uams.edu.

Exhibits
The UAMS Library and Arkansas Consumer Health Information Network [ARCHIN] exhibited at two recent health fairs. On October 19, 2001, Susan Steelman demonstrated the ARHealthLINK consumer health web site at the Arkansas Children's Hospital Employee Wellness Fair. Peggy Morrison exhibited the ARHealthLINK site at the UAMS Employee Health Fair on October 25, 2001.

ARHealthLINK was also exhibited at the UAMS Information Technology Fair in Jeff Banks Student Union on November 8, 2001 by Susan Steelman, Mary Ryan and Dena Plaisted. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth during these events.

More Ideas for Holiday Gifts

Don't forget you can "adopt" a book in the History of Medicine collection by funding conservation treatment. You can also donate a book to the Library's regular collection, or the History of Medicine collection, in someone's honor or memory. Membership in the History of Medicine Associates is a great gift for someone interested in the history of the health sciences.

For information on gift donations of books to the regular collection contact Mary Hawks, Collection Management, 686-6749, or e-mail hawksmarys@uams.edu.

For information on donations to the History of Medicine collection, Adopt-a-Book, or membership in the History of Medicine Associates, contact Margaret Johnson, Historical Research Center, 686 6733, or e-mail johnsonmargareta@uams.edu.

UAMS Library News Added to List

The UAMS Library News was recently added to the list of newsletters (http://southmed.usouthal.edu/library/libnews.htm) published by academic health sciences libraries that is monitored by Sally Murray at the University of South Alabama Biomedical Library.

This listing allows the newsletter to be even more accessible to those looking for information on UAMS, even though it is also indexed by search engines, and does have a viable "list of subscribers".

The View from the VA

As part of the South Central VA Health Care Network, the Central Arkansas Veterans Health Care System has recently gained access to a nice selection of web resources. Staff who have access to the VA Intranet can tap these resources with a few clicks of their computer mouse.

The first click is to the CAVHS homepage. From there, you should click on the Library link. Once the Library homepage loads, you should then click on the Virtual Library link which will take you to the web page that serves as a portal to the resources.

CancerNet. A gateway to the most recent and accurate cancer information from the National Cancer Institute.

EBSCOhost. Provides access to 5 databases that can be searched individually or simultaneously.

Harrison's Online. The full searchable text of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine.

Health and Wellness Center. An integrated collection of general interest, health and fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, reference books and pamphlets. Records are available in a combination of indexing, abstracts and/or full text formats.

MD Consult. Designed to meet the needs of practicing physicians, MD Consult includes the most trusted clinical content from over 50 publishers and organizations.

Medical Matrix. An excellent source for ranked, peer-reviewed, annotated, and updated clinical medical resources on the web.

Merck Publications. Full texts of the Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, the Merck Manual of Medical Information (home edition), and the Merck Manual of Geriatrics.

PsycInfo Plus Text (Proquest). Provides indexing and abstracts for over one million articles in 1,500 journals from over 50 countries. This database, provided by the American Psychological Association, also includes abstracts for dissertations, books and book chapters ranging in date from 1887 to the present.

SAMS (Scientific American Medicine). Scientific American Medicine online.

Stat-Ref. A complete medical reference library including most Little, Brown books.

While you're at the VA, don't forget these valuable resources are as close as your computer. For assistance in using them, you may contact the Librarians at the VA.
