Below is a quick glimpse of some important outreach items of interest.

OT/PT/Public Health Focus
The UAMS Library has an annual subcontract with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (funded by the National Library of Medicine or NLM) to provide training for unaffiliated health professionals in Arkansas to use NLM's products and services.

The outreach subcontracts for the next 5 years will focus on particular groups of health professionals. This year's contract enables us to provide training in the use of NLM databases and products for Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and public health officials working in state health units/departments.

These 3 groups will have access to free training in the use of PubMed to search the MEDLINE database, as well as assistance finding information resources in their fields and for presentation to their professional groups.

Internet Connectivity Sites
Johnson Regional Medical Center in Clarksville was awarded an Internet Connectivity Grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region which is part of the National Library of Medicine. During October, 2001, Susan Steelman visited JRMC and conducted PubMed training for the staff there.

Each award includes a new computer, printer, fax machine and 12 months of Internet access. Free training is provided in the use of the equipment, general Internet functions and use, and PubMed searching.

Additional awards should be available in coming months. If you know of an Arkansas hospital with little or no Internet connectivity, it may be eligible for this program. Exhibits
The UAMS Library and Arkansas Consumer Health Information Network [ARCHIN] exhibited at two recent health fairs. On October 19, 2001, Susan Steelman demonstrated the ARHealthLINK consumer health web site at the Arkansas Children's Hospital Employee Wellness Fair. Peggy Morrison exhibited the ARHealthLINK site at the UAMS Employee Health Fair on October 25, 2001.

ARHealthLINK was also exhibited at the UAMS Information Technology Fair in Jeff Banks Student Union on November 8, 2001 by Susan Steelman, Mary Ryan and Dena Plaisted. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth during these events.

PubMed Class Schedule

Please note that free PubMed classes are being offered each month. These classes are open to any practicing health care professional in Arkansas.
