MORE ELECTRONIC JOURNALS ADDED

As indicated in an article elsewhere in this newsletter, the Library is adding 43 additional full-text journals through the Academic Ideal program. We are purchasing access to these full-text journals as part of an agreement between the South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium (SCAMeL) and Academic Ideal. Purchasing products as a group allows us to get better prices than we could individually. The SCAMeL consortium, which is composed of the UAMS Library and thirteen other academic medical libraries in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico, will continue to investigate other online products, which might be purchased more cheaply as a group. The next products the consortium will be considering for purchase are journals available through Highwire Press (such as the American Heart Association and American Psychiatric Association titles). Please send any recommendations for products you would like for us to consider purchasing in electronic format to Mary Hawks or myself.

RENOVATION/NEW FURNITURE UPDATE

As you may recall, some major improvements in the Library's physical facility were made last year, including recarpeting of the first two floors, reorganizing of space on the first floor, adding many public computer workstations throughout the Library, and adding three group study/viewing rooms on the third floor. Several other improvements to the Library's physical facilities have been made recently or will be completed soon, including the following:

We apologize for any inconvenience our users may have experienced while these improvements were being made. We still have a fairly long list of other needed improvements, but since the special funding we have been using for these improvements has been depleted, no other substantial improvements are being anticipated for the near future. However, we will continue to attempt to make improvements not requiring significant funding.

EDWINA WALLS MANN TO RETIRE

Edwina Walls Mann will be retiring on June 30th after working in various positions at the UAMS Library since September of 1965. Edwina became the History of Medicine librarian in 1978, and since then she has established and developed the Historical Research Center (HRC) program, which includes the history of medicine collections and institutional archives.

Edwina is a hard-working and dedicated librarian who has done a remarkable job of establishing the HRC and developing it into a first-rate program. We appreciate her 35 years of dedicated service and will miss her talents and enthusiasm, but we wish her well in the many activities she has planned for the future. Recruitment for a new head of the HRC is currently underway.

NEW ACADEMIC IDEAL TITLES

The 43 new titles that will be available through Academic Ideal are listed below. UAMS Library holdings only include 8 of these titles in print format, so our patrons now have access to 35 additional titles. Please remember that these titles will only be available electronically for the most recent issues - the earliest may possibly be December of 1999, depending on the subscription terms. For earlier issues, the Library's print holdings as well as Interlibrary Loan will continue to be available. If you have any questions about access to any of these titles, please contact Sally Kasalko (KasalkoSallyG@exchange.uams.edu, 686-6738, Slot 586).

CLINICAL TRIALS DATABASE NOW AVAILABLE

On February 29, 2000 the National Institutes of Health launched the consumer-friendly database, ClinicalTrials.gov, with information on more than 4,000 federal and private medical studies involving patients and others at more than 47,000 locations nationwide. The URL for the new database is http://clinicaltrials.gov.

ClinicalTrials.gov provides patients and members of the public easy access to information about the location of clinical trials, their design and purpose, criteria for participation and additional disease and treatment information. This database may also be reached through the National Library of Medicine's Web site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov and through its consumer health information service MEDLINEplus at http://medlineplus.gov or through the UAMS Library's online catalog under the title.

The press release and more detailed information are available at the NLM web site: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/news/press_releases/clintrlpr00.html

HISTORY OF MEDICINE AWARD AVAILABLE

A History of Medicine Associates Research Award, in the amount of $1,000, is offered to a successful applicant who is interested in preparing a paper on an aspect of the health sciences in Arkansas. The award is for research in the history of the health sciences in Arkansas on a topic that makes use of the UAMS Library's Historical Research Center in addition to other research collections. Applicants are sought not only from the discipline of the health sciences but also from other disciplines, e.g., history, sociology, and health administration.

There is no formal application document, but guidelines are available from the address given below. The application must include a summary of the paper's topic, a proposed budget, and an anticipated completion date for the paper. The deadline for applications for the award is May of each year. A committee of the History of Medicine Associates will determine the successful application, and the announcement of the recipient of the award will be made in June.

Guidelines for application as well as other information are available from:

FEDERAL RESEARCH IN PROGRESS (FEDRIP) NOW AVAILABLE

The UAMS Library has inaugurated a one-year trial subscription to the Federal Research In Progress (FEDRIP) database for UAMS researchers. The database provides access to information about ongoing federally funded projects in the fields of the life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering. FEDRIP's uniqueness lies in its structure as a non-bibliographic information source about research in progress. Project descriptions generally include: project title, keywords, start date, estimated completion date, principal investigator, performing and sponsoring organizations, summary, and progress report. Record content varies depending on the source agency. It is updated monthly.

Who Should Access the FEDRIP Database and Why? Anyone needing to keep informed about federally sponsored research projects in the fields of the life, physical, and engineering sciences.

Use FEDRIP to:

The agencies that contribute to FEDRIP include: Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, Department of Veterans Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Highway Administration, National Institutes of Health, NASA, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Small Business Innovation Research, US Geological Survey.

FEDRIP is available at http://grc.ntis.gov. No login ID or Password is needed for UAMS researchers on campus, at the VA, at ACH, or from home when using a UAMS Aristotle account. Just click on "LOGIN Subscriber" at the top of the left sidebar after reaching the site. Please be sure to click on the "exit" button when you are finished searching so you don't tie up access to the site for the default 15 minutes of no activity.

For more information about FEDRIP contact Sally Kasalko (KasalkoSallyG@exchange.uams.edu, 686-6738, Slot 586) in the UAMS Library. When you use this database please give us some feedback so we can assess its usefulness when considering the continuation of the subscription.

OVID: NEW AND IMPROVED, REALLY!!!

I'm usually very cynical about the 'new and improved' label because often my favorite cereal tastes worse instead of better once that label has appeared on the box. In the case of Ovid 4.1.0 which opened on March 22, there are many changes which are true improvements--things users here have been requesting for a long time. Read on:

To request a handout packet showing these new options, call the Information Desk at 686-6734 or email us at LibraryInformationServices@exchange.uams.edu.

NEW LIBRARY EXHIBIT

"VESALIANA at the UAMS Library" is the new exhibit in the UAMS Library exhibit cases. The library is fortunate to own a facsimile edition of the Fabrica of 1543 by Andreas Vesalius and a copy of Icones Anatomicae published in 1934 from the original woodblocks of the 1555 second edition of the Fabrica. These and other books about Vesalius and his work are available for viewing at the UAMS Library during regular hours through April 30.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK SALE

The Library hosted its annual book sale on March 4th. As always we had enthusiastic response from faculty, students and staff. Over 1100 books sold for over $600. It is always a fun time for our Library staff, and we appreciate the great support from our patrons.
