From the Director

This is the first issue of the UAMS Library's newsletter which is being published only in electronic format. Publishing in electronic format instead of printed format is much cheaper and enables us to make the news available much more quickly. Anyone wanting to receive a notice when a new issue is available on the Library's web site can send a message to Amanda Saar (SaarAmandaE@exchange.uams.edu or 686-8517).

The Library's web site (www.library.uams.edu) has been redesigned and several new features have been added. Eric Dousay and other members of the staff have worked very hard for several months to complete the redesign. The new web site is a convenient way to access many of the Library's electronic resources and to access information about the Library. Please note that there is a feedback form in the "Forms" section which allows you to provide comments about the site and about other Library services.

As mentioned in the last issue of the newsletter, the Library will be cutting a significant number of journal subscriptions because of the critical budget situation. The list of potential cancellations is currently available on the Library's web site under "What's New" (www.library.uams.edu/whatsnew/news/journals/jourcancl2.htm). Please review the list and give any input you might have about these titles to Mary Hawks (HawksMaryS@exchange.uams.edu or 686-6749) by August 28th.

The Library's annual report for 1999/2000 is now available in the "About the Library" section of the Library's web site. Although budget cuts hampered the staff from fulfilling all of the objectives set at the beginning of the year, we still accomplished most of our objectives. The statistical summary of basic activities accomplished during the year is available at www.library.uams.edu/aboutlib/annualrpt.htm#_Toc40.

Highlights of other accomplishments during the past year include:

Not surprisingly, one of the most popular changes made during the year was the revision of the food and drink policy to allow drinks in covered containers to be brought into the Library.

Outreach News

Welcome to the newest column of UAMS Library News, contributed by Susan Steelman, the UAMS Library's Coordinator of Outreach Services. Through this column we hope to keep you informed about the Library's outreach activities around the state. The UAMS Library has a subcontract with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region (NN/LM SCR) under the National Library of Medicine to act as the Resource Library for the state of Arkansas. This subcontract enables us to provide backup reference services, interlibrary loans and document delivery services, training, and technical support to other Arkansas medical libraries and health care professionals. Library services and the databases/products of the National Library of Medicine, such as PubMed and the MEDLINE database, are promoted through exhibits at professional meetings of librarians, physicians, pharmacists and other health care professionals. We also provide free training to any Arkansas librarian or health care professional in the proper use of PubMed and the Loansome Doc document ordering system.

The UAMS Library exhibited at the Arkansas Osteopathic Medical Association's Annual Meeting, August 3-5 in Eureka Springs.

A major aspect of our outreach activities is the symbiotic relationship between the UAMS Library and the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Libraries in the state. Arkansas is divided into 7 regions with each AHEC covering certain counties. This regional breakdown is important because it forms the backbone of local medical library services available to health care professionals in the state. The UAMS Library provides direct service to health care professionals in Cleburne, Faulkner, Garland, Hot Spring, Perry, Pulaski, Saline, Van Buren and White counties. These services include computer searches, current awareness services, interlibrary loan and document delivery assistance. For health care professionals in other counties, the local AHEC/DHEC will provide similar services.

All health professionals in the state can receive basic reference assistance and can arrange tours and demonstrations in the Library and the Learning Resource Center as well as access to the Historical Research Center collection. Also, any licensed health professional in Arkansas may check out books and journals by applying at the Circulation Desk for a UAMS Library card. Those individuals who are unable to come to Little Rock may request UAMS Library materials via interlibrary loan through their local hospital, AHEC/DHEC, college or university library.

If you are interested in a list of the counties served by each AHEC or have questions regarding outreach services or events, please contact Susan Steelman, Coordinator of Outreach Services, UAMS Library, 501-686-6737 or SteelmanSusanC@exchange.uams.edu.

Arts of UAMS Exhibit

The present Arts of UAMS exhibit in the UAMS Library features the photographs of Dr. Max L. Baker, faculty in Radiology at UAMS. Work in his church's Medical Mission Program has allowed Dr. Baker not only to travel and help people through mission clinics, but to capture images of the lands and cultures in which he finds himself. The exhibited works do present various aspects of life in Benin, one of the smallest African countries, as well as Jamaica, Cuba, Paris, and even local points of interest.

Dr. Baker attended the Nikon School of Photography, and studied photojournalism at UALR under Johnpaul Jones, a Media Services photographer at UAMS. His first published photograph was shot with a Kodak Brownie. It appeared in the Batesville Daily Guard in 1956.

Some examples of his work can be seen on this page. But come by the exhibit to see more ! It will be up through August 31, 2000.

Current Protocols CD-ROM

The UAMS Library is providing this resource on a one-year trial basis. If you try it we would like to have a response from you on how useful you found it. It is not inexpensive and it can only be renewed if we hear from a significant number of researchers who find it useful.

This CD-based product contains the full contents of the Current Protocols in Human Genetics manual.

This manual is used in laboratories around the world as an authoritative source for effective, reliable methods in biological research and experimentation. Natural language searching is supported along with Boolean searching and term adjacency. It is updated quarterly.

Current Protocols in Human Genetics on CD-ROM is in the Library's Reserve Collection on the first floor behind the Circulation Desk under the call number: QZ50 C936 1999. There is a terminal nearby that is set up to search this CD. For further information on, and to report your response to, this electronic information product call or e-mail Sally Kasalko, 686-6738 or KasalkoSallyG@exchange.uams.edu.

A Word from Circulation

PLEASE DO NOT RESHELVE ITEMS!

Library patrons are asked to please leave all books and journals that are not checked out on top of designated book trucks or on the table tops ,instead of reshelving them. The effort is appreciated, but the Library does count items as they are reshelved. If the use of a journal is not counted, it could be considered for subscription cancellation - so please don't reshelve.

Checked out items do need to be returned to the Circulation Desk.

BE EASY ON YOURSELF: AVOID LOCKING THE EXIT GATE

Please pass all checked out materials to the person at the front desk before exiting so that the alarm is not triggered and the security gate does not lock.

AHEC Listing in Library Catalog

As of July 24, 2000, the UAMS Library's online catalog (www.libcatalog.uams.edu) shows not only what the UAMS Library owns, but also the book and audiovisual holdings of Arkansas' 6 other AHEC Libraries. (See related article.)

This allows each of the AHEC's to have an online catalog, while giving all medical library users the ability to see, as the result of one search, whether or not a specific library owns an item. This is especially useful to the UAMS students and residents on rotation at one of the AHEC's.

Eventually there will be a way for users to limit to just the AHEC combined collection, which will take less time for users not interested in the UAMS Library holdings.

Check out the catalog at the above URL, and if you have questions or comments, email or call: Mary Hawks (HawksMaryS@exchange.uams.edu or 686-6749).
