Diabetes:
Managing a 21st Century Lifestyle Disease
Diabetes mellitus affects nearly 6% of the
U.S. population, making it one of the most common medical problems seen
by physicians. Each year, diabetes costs the nation nearly $100 billion

failure, cardiovascular disease, blindness, and nerve damage, is an
important component of regular care. Equally critical to successful
treatment is effective patient self-management and education. Often,
this means a coordinated and collaborative healthcare effort. This video
reviews the rising prevalence and pathophysiology of diabetes, including
the disturbing rise in Type 2 diabetes among children. In addition,
it discusses how associated syndromes, such as insulin resistance, are
joining diabetes as major lifestyle diseases of the 21st centruy. (VHS)
