HMA Research Award GuidelinesThe History of Medicine Associates Research Award is offered annually by the Associates for the best research proposal for a paper on an aspect of the history of the health sciences in Arkansas. The winning applicant is presented a certificate and $1,000 to assist with the expenses of the research. Half of the award is presented when the proposal is accepted and the other half upon completion and acceptance of the paper. The Research Award was established in 1985 to encourage research in the history of the health sciences in Arkansas. The Medical Education Foundation for Arkansas of the Arkansas Medical Society has generously provided partial funding for the Research Awards.
EligibilityProposals must treat an aspect of the history of the health sciences in Arkansas. Previously written papers which have been published or are under consideration for publication are not eligible. Proposals should be submitted to the Treasurer of the History of Medicine Associates by May 31st of the specified year. The winning applicant is notified in June.
Proposal GuidelinesProposals will be judged on the basis of originality, literature review, and contribution to the history of the Arkansas health sciences. The proposal should include:
Paper GuidelinesOnce the proposal has been accepted, the following guidelines are suggested for writing the paper: Papers should be typed, double-spaced, on one side only, approximately 25 pages (exclusive of notes and appendices). The title of the paper should appear at the head of the manuscript. Notes should conform to a bibliographic standard, e.g. the Chicago Manual of Style, as illustrated in the latest edition of Turabian's A Manual for Writers . . . The name and address of the author should appear on a separate cover sheet.
Evaluation of the PaperUpon completion, each paper is read by two members of the History of Medicine Associates Research Award Selection Committee to determine the acceptability of the paper. The following guidelines are considered when the papers are read by the reviewers: A. Contribution to the history of the health sciences in Arkansas B. Bibliographic research C. Style (clarity, appearance, conciseness, structure) D. Originality E. Quality of design or of arguments developed to support a particular hypothesis D. Conformity to a bibliographic standard, e.g. Chicago Manual of Style, as illustrated in the latest edition of Turabian's A Manual for Writers . . .
The Associates will assist the author in submitting the paper for publication. If there are no appropriate proposals, the Associates may elect not to give the Research Award in a specified year.
