Construction History

This history of construction at the Markham Street location of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) was a combined effort by many departments and was coordinated through UAMS Construction Management.

The buildings are listed chronologically by the year the university took ownership or were under construction, with the exception of buildings purchased or the many enclosed bridges that connect several buildings on this campus.

Some of the buildings may be listed earlier than first used because shelled (unfinished) floors were completed later. Building area listed is by gross square feet due to net square feet changes with renovations and room/bed counts are from the original drawings and may have changed with renovations.

While the photos show the exterior of the buildings, it should be noted that many building interiors have been renovated or redesigned through the years to serve evolving campus needs. Many of those programs have grown to the point that new or larger buildings were needed to continue their commitment to the people of Arkansas and the many visitors from outside the state and around the world that come here for education, research or treatment.

Why the need to grow?
